The expression, “Everyone has a book in them,” is truer today than ever before owed to computers, email and the internet.  So, if you think about writing a book or even have one ready to go, you must first know the answers to some important questions to avoid hiring an editor before the right time.

Avoid these 12 deadly mistakes to save money and reduce frustration when seeking an editor to help you make your book a success.  Don’t hire an editor if …

  1. You don’t know what an editor does or how they can help you.

  2. You don’t know what kind of editor is best for you or when you need them.

  3. You don’t know about the process of writing, editing and marketing for success.

  4. You don’t know what purpose your book will serve.

  5. You don’t know the category of your book or how it will be published.

  6. You don’t know the benefits of your book.

  7. You don’t know your market or audience for your book.

  8. You don’t have an introduction or synopsis of the book or a table of contents.

  9. You don’t know if you are actually finished or how much more you will write.

  10. You don’t have an idea of how you want your book to look when published.

  11. You have no idea what the reader wants from a book today.

  12. You don’t even have a working title.

You are not ready to work with an editor if you do not have answers to these statements.  An editor can help you in many ways to ensure your content captures the reader; but if the preliminary work has not been completed, you will waste both time and money with an editor, and the venture will be frustrating at best.  You may, however, be well advised to explore these issues more fully with a book coach instead; and then once your book is in close-to-final draft, hire an editor.  Here’s to your publishing success!
